Genius Electronic Optical, the camera lens supplier, has had issues with the coating on the wide-angle camera lens designed for the 5.4-inch and the 6.1-inch iPhone 12 models.
Apple has confirmed that the launch of the iPhone will be delayed by a few weeks. The launch itself will be held in two parts with the two 6.1-inch models (Pro and non-Pro) arriving first followed by the 5.4-inch non-Pro and the 6.7-inch Pro models coming in later.
According to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, one of the camera lens suppliers for the Apple iPhone 12 is facing quality issues. But Kuo says that this will not affect Apple’s launch schedule of the much-awaited iPhone 12. The smartphone has already been delayed though.
The analyst’s latest report reveals that Genius Electronic Optical, the camera lens supplier, has had issues with the coating on the wide-angle camera lens designed for the 5.4-inch and the 6.1-inch iPhone 12 models. These issues were detected during high-temperature/high-humidity (HTHH) testing and will hamper Genius Electronic Optical’s ability to supply the new iPhone.
Kuo’s report also states that as per his estimates, the low-end 7P wide-angle lens, CCM, and final assembly mass production of the 5.4-inch and 6.1-inch aluminum frame iPhones will happen in mid-to-late August, mid-to-late September and by early October, respectively.
The report adds that given Genius’ uncertain timetable when it comes to solving the quality issue with the film cracking, Apple will be giving priority to purchasing Largan’s low-end 1/2.6-inch 7P wide-angle lens in the initial supply stage at least to ensure the two aluminum-framed iPhone 12s can be launched as scheduled.
Kuo added that Genius might have to slash prices by 30% as this would act as an incentive for the issue and keep it relevant while not having to lose its shares to Largan. Largan is not facing any issue at the moment.
